Like most cities, Scandia previously relied on the state to issue electrical permits and perform electrical inspections. During a Minnesota state government shut-down, state electrical permits and inspections were halted, stalling construction projects throughout the state. To address this situation and avoid similar impacts in the event of future shut-downs, many cities decided to take over this function.
The City found that issuing electrical permits in conjunction with other permits would not be a significant administrative burden for the city. Fees (the same fee schedule used for state electrical permits) will cover the city’s costs including the inspections.
Issuing permits locally will also improve service to the public. Contractors and property owners will be able to obtain electrical permits locally, and at the same time and place they obtain the other permits needed for their projects. Inspection scheduling should also be more flexible.
