On August 9, 2011 the Scandia City Council officially changed the name of the city’s lighted ball field, 21398 Olinda Trail North, on the west side of Olinda Trail and north of Highway 97 to “Wayne Erickson Memorial Ball Park.”

Scandia played its first softball games in 1946. The present Scandia ball field was built in 1948. Scandia won most of the league championships in the Chisago Lakes League then and was a hotbed of men’s fast pitch softball for many years.

Scandia has had only one Minnesota State Hall of Famer; that was Wayne Erickson. He was inducted in 1984. Wayne started playing ball for Scandia when he was 16 and pitched for Scandia for 20 years. In the 1960’s, he played in many different leagues, sometimes five nights a week. Wayne took Scandia to 4 State Championships, 1963, 1966, 1967 and 1968. In his lifetime Wayne had 59 no-hitters, 12 perfect games, and 18 strike-outs in one game. He also pitched 56 innings in 2 days and was the state tournament MVP in 1963. Wayne passed away on April 4th, 1992.
